DETROIT - Yasmine Toney describes herself as a “dark-skinned sista.” So when she heard about a recent club promotion in Detroit, allowing all-night free admission to black women with fair or light skin, she was incensed.

“It’s offensive,” Toney said. “It continues a negative stereotype.”

“I’m perceived to be aggressive, assertive, attitude-having ... a lot of things, because my complexion is darker,” said the 24-year-old receptionist.

STORY CONTINUED....

Here's a pretty interesting article on the debate between light-skinned and black-skinned and the racial stereotypes perceived by both groups. Echoes a lot of the arguments and experiences shared on this board.

Well "Light Skin" has always been the preference in Detroit, lol.  I've heard that in the early half of the 20th Century the mulatto elite had that city on lock.  Below is a pic from a Black Debutante Ball in D-Town from back in the day.

The only thing I have a problem with is just how light did a woman have to be to get her free groove on?

I do have a problem with it, because it say Light Skinned  women and all Libra's. I think it is a mockery.

This is not about "history repeating itself", this was simply a brother out there doing his thing in promoting an event. Apparently, he had other "color/hue" events lined up as well.

As usual, some folks want to make a big deal out of it and take it someplace else.

In addition, we know that the darker skinned women would take offense. I wonder if he would have gotten the same response had he promoted the "darker" skinned event first.

I call this nothing more than his using poor judgement.

this is just another form of racist BS from a black man with a fettish for lighter complexion woman.  who gives a rat's a** what complexion people are let it be dark, light bright, white, etc...
ps.. only in Detroit won't be suprise if I see this in Chicago

I know I'm digging in the achieves here but I have to agree with the poster of this comment. I believe the biggest perpetrators of the light skin/dark skin debate among women in the Black community are Black men. I believe Black women are guilty, but not nearly as guilty as Black men.
